Exciting 1st-year Results of the FAST Way Program
On August 5, just moments before Vice President Jason Curtis delivered an update on the FAST Way program outcomes to the board of trustees during his Equity Spotlight session, I had the privilege of attending the Deans and Directors conference at Santa Barbara City College alongside my esteemed colleagues. This gathering provided a unique platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among academic leaders on the Central Coast area.
During the conference, Dean Carlos Moreno and I had the privilege of presenting our collaborative initiative under AB 1705, titled "From Inquiry to Innovation to Impact." In this session, we not only shared our engaging FAST Way narrative but also showcased the impressive outcomes achieved by our dedicated FAST Way faculty team. The positive feedback we received on our presentation serves as both inspiration and a valuable resource for our peers, illustrating the transformative potential of innovative educational practices in promoting equity and enhancing student success.
During our presentation, two key elements truly stood out. First, the participants were impressed by our innovative pairing of the ENGL C1000 and COMM C1000 courses, where faculty aligned the curriculum and integrated teaching and learning activities seamlessly. Additionally, when we discussed the cognitive load theory that informed the design of the program, it became clear how this approach effectively supports the momentum that first-year students need. This aspect was particularly well received by the audience.
Our story is not just unique; it is a powerful testament to the transformative role of faculty in the journey from inquiry to innovation and ultimately, to impact. This is a truly student-centered initiative that exemplifies the essence of Project-Based Learning. From the initial stages of inquiry, the faculty were engaged in creating hands-on projects that spark curiosity and creativity among multiple disciplines. As we innovate within the FAST Way learning community, we cultivate an environment with profound impact on student success and engagement.
We are excited for next year's Deans and Directors conference at Antelope Valley College.
