Writing and thinking effectively with originality, clarity, and credibility is a skill all college students benefit from having and improving upon throughout their academic careers and beyond. Studies suggest that the best way to strengthen one’s writing is to not do it alone, and that is why we encourage all Cuesta students to seek support and build community by attending professors' office hours and participating in regular visits either virtually or in-person to our Writing Center and related workshops. Over the last few months, the Writing Center has increased the number of English tutors we have to nine and the number of English courses with embedded tutors to twelve. We have also created the 201A Connect Thursdays (201ACT) writing workshops that take place twice a month on the SLO campus and once a month at the North County campus. 201A Connect Thursdays workshops offer students a communal space to seek writing support from their peers, English faculty, and Writing Center tutors. These workshops have proven to be popular among 201A students who need a fun and supportive environment to receive help with all things writing-related: brainstorming, organization, development, and expression.
In related news, the Writing Center Tutors attended an English Division meeting to introduce themselves to faculty and build connection for better student support. We also have established a Writing Center and English Embedded Tutoring Canvas shell for tutors and faculty to share ideas, store relevant documents, make important announcements, and converse on all things tutoring.
We welcome all support, suggestions, and questions regarding these projects and look forward to increasing our programs and outreach to make our writing center, tutoring, and support projects reach more and more students.
