We are excited to announce the following math faculty members for completing the Motivate Lab innovator projects:
Shelby B.
Denise C.
Bill D.
Jodi M.
Jen S.
Shelby B. (not pictured above) shared with us her reflection on implementing what she learned from the Motivating Learners Course.
I did the Motivate Learning Lab over the summer and I want to share that implementing one of the projects was a great success. On the first day of face-to-face Math 242 we did a discussion activity geared towards establishing our class "Purpose" where students shared on the board what they believe the "purpose" of Math 242 is for them. The students wrote:
To get ready for Calculus
And
here to learn
As a class we landed on the conclusion that Math 242 is an excellent preparation option for Calculus 1, particularly paired with Trigonometry! Some students shared they are taking Math 242 after initially attempting Math 265A in a previous semester. Many students were high school students who had PreCalc in high school, but were happy to have the opportunity to take Math 242 with me to bolster their high school math skills because they don't feel Calc ready.
The group was invigorated not only by the discussion, but by some other techniques I learned in Motivate Lab, such as taking time to have one on one conversations and giving the class a campus tour.
I would say it was the most successful first day I have had.
Cheers to all of you, and hopefully your first days were equally as positive!
